Pop-Punk Duo girlfriends Liken a Relationship’s Impact to a “Tattoo” on New Single

It looks like the next few months will be the summer of pop-punk, partly thanks to girlfriends, a collaboration between Apple Music host Travis Mills and Goldfinger drummer Nick Gross. Their new single “Tattoo” is full of intricate details packed into an earworm melody that will definitely get stuck in your head.

“I wrote ‘Tattoo’ right after I got my neck tattoo covered up,” Travis Mills shares. “I had it done 14 years ago and wanted something different. The whole time sitting in that chair, I kept thinking about how I had not heard a song about getting an actual tattoo for someone and how it can either make or break a relationship. I took the idea to the studio the next day and Nick and I wrote the song in 30 minutes. It was so fast. I love the idea of having a love song based around the concept of a tattoo. Most relationships don’t last, but a tattoo is forever.”

Mills and Gross are no strangers to the music scene, having both gotten their start in their teens. As T. Mills, Travis got to rap on Warped Tour, while Gross played on MTV’s TRL when he was just 17. “Tattoo” is the duo’s second single of the year following May’s punchy “Congratulations” with Jasiah, which has already amassed nearly 900,000 Spotify streams in just two months. They released their self-titled debut album, produced by pop-punk legend John Feldmann, last fall and are gearing up for their sophomore effort.

“That first record was definitely an homage to all the bands that laid the foundations of this genre and that made us fall in love with this genre in the first place,” Mills explained to Mundane. “With that record, we wanted to take people back. With this one, we want to push them forward and see if we can lay new foundations to redefine this genre ourselves.”

Later this year, girlfriends will be embarking on a nationwide tour with MOD SUN and Tyler Posey, stopping in cities like Chicago, IL and Brooklyn, NY. They’ll also be hopping on to an Iowa date on Machine Gun Kelly’s Tickets to My Downfall tour in September, alongside jxdn, KennyHoopla, and carolesdaughter.
