Maria’s Will

INT. MARIA’S ROOM – DAY

                   KASSY

              (Very Excited)

Maria, Maria look!

*The morning sunlight bathes Maria’s room, making it look like a glimpse of heaven. Kassy barges into Maria’s room, unable to hold in her excitement. Maria is holding an injured Monarch Butterfly in her hands*

              MARIA

(Rubbing her eyes)

Huh? Yes Kassy, what is it?

*Maria is woken up by her younger sister Kassy, rubbing the fatigue out of her eyes so she can listen intently to what Kassy has to say*

                   KASSY

I found this butterfly outside, and its wing is hurt

*Kassy gets on the side of Maria’s bed, opening up her hands revealing the butterfly*

                   MARIA

              (Shocked)

Oh my gosh, what happened to him? His wing has been ripped.

                   KASSY

I know, it’s terrible! Is there anything that we can do for it?

                   MARIA

I’m not too sure, Kassy. I don’t know anything about butterflies.

                   KASSY

              (Surprised)

What!? There has to be something that we can do? I can’t put him back on the porch, he won’t survive out there.

                   MARIA

You’re right, he probably won’t, but you have to understand that in the wild if an animal is injured, there’s no animal hospital that it can go to.

                   KASSY

              (Confused)

Huh? What do you mean? Don’t all animals heal their wounds over time?

                   MARIA

Well yeah, some of them can, but let’s say a lion somehow manages to lose its leg. That leg is gone for good.

                   KASSY

              (Shocked)

No way! Is there nothing that they can do about it? Nothing at all!?

                   MARIA

If the lion is in the care of humans, then it could get medical care, but if it’s in the wild, the most help it could get is from its pride, which is the group it roams with.

                   KASSY

So it could really lose its leg for good?

                   MARIA

Yeah, as awful as it sounds. Unfortunately for that butterfly, it doesn’t have a group that can help it, so that means it’ll—

*Kassy cuts off Maria before she can finish her sentence*

                   KASSY

              (Angrily)

No, no, no! Don’t you dare say it. We can help save this butterfly, it’s in our care now!

                   MARIA

In our care? Kassy, I have no idea how to mend a butterflies wing, let alone take care of any sort of animal.

                   KASSY

We don’t have to mend his wing; we can let him live with us. He’s only a butterfly, he won’t take up much space!

MARIA

              (Chuckling)

How’re you gonna take care of this butterfly? Do you even know what they eat?

                   KASSY

              (Excited)

Of course, I know what they eat, and I want you to know what they eat two, follow me, Maria.

*Before Maria can respond, Kassy runs out of her room, cupping the butterfly in her hands. Maria gets out of bed, knowing that Kassy is dead set on helping the butterfly*
