Funny. Sensitive. Quirky. Insightful. These words and many others describe the Real daytime talk show host named Tamera Mowry-Housley.

On Monday, July 13th she announced on Instagram some bittersweet news “For seven years, my home and heart has been at The Real. The friendships that I’ve made there will last a lifetime, and the people that I’ve had the blessing to interview have changed my life for the better. I’m so proud of what all the ladies and I have accomplished there, including two well-deserved NAACP Image Awards and a Daytime Emmy. However, all good things must come to an end, and it’s with a bittersweet smile that I announced that I am moving on from The Real. To my fellow hosts, I love you, I will miss you, and I will always be there for you. Thank you for teaching me, supporting me, and loving all of me. Sisters forever. I’ll be rooting for you, as I look forward to spending more time with my family, pursuing amazing new opportunities, and embarking on the next chapter of my life.”

For seven years, I have faithfully watched the Real talk show. It had 4 consistent talk show cohosts:  Tamera Mowery-Housley, Loni Love, Adrienne Houghton and Jeannie Mai.  The Real talk show is an entertaining and informative show. The cohosts contribute meaningful views while they discuss kitchen talk topics. They discuss current events, family/relationship situations, etc.

Originally, I tuned in to the show solely for Tamera Mowery-Housley. I was a big fan of her and her sister Tia Mowery-Hardrict. Both ladies exemplified black girl magic in the Sister Sister tv show.  Years ago, I did not know Tamera’s viewpoints, I only knew that she was a good actress.

When I tuned in to the Real, I was surprised, Tamera and I agreed on many topics. It was refreshing to learn a few facts:

  • She is a woman of strong Christian faith
  • Usually she has a conservative/traditional view on topics
  • She struggled with her individuality; People would associate Tamera and Tia as one person and she had to work really hard for people to differentiate between the two of them. Tamera and Tia both starred in the movie called Twitches.  The movie crew tried to cover Tamera’s mole and Tamera cried because the mole was a sign of her individuality.
  • She waited until she was 29 years old to have sex and the only person, she slept with is her husband, Adam Housley.
  • She received a lot of hate for being in an interracial relationship.

Over time as I looked at the show, I got to know the other ladies. I learned that Loni was more than a comedian, she has a lot of practical insights about life and Black community. I learned that outgoing Adrienne is quite introverted, funny and is a big Christian believer. I learned that stylish Jeannie is pretty deep and could easily be a motivation speaker. They developed a sisterhood and friendship. It transgressed to outside of the show as well.

I started to root for not just Tamera but all of them too. I will definitely miss Tamera on the Real but I am excited to see her next chapter.

Thanks, Tamera, for your seven years on the Real and thanks for making me give the Real a chance. I love all the ladies on the Real and will continue to watch even though you are no longer there.
