A small win for environmentalists and nature-lovers across the nation! Today, Congress passed the Great American Outdoors Act, which will permanently fund our state and local parks.
According to Congress.gov, this new Act ensure that “there shall be deposited into the fund an amount equal to 50% of all federal revenues from the development of oil, gas, coal, or alternative or renewable energy on federal lands and waters. Deposited amounts must not exceed $1.9 billion for any fiscal year.”
This increase of funds will help our parks to preserve wildlife in the wake of storms, floods, natural disasters, or any other destruction, which are all becoming more common as climate change sets in. It will also help protect our natural biodiversity, an important step in saving our wildlife.
Not only that, but the Act will also put tens of thousands of people back to work in maintaining our parks. What a great way to boost the economy while saving our earth!
This Act is actually the first step of a plan to protect at least 30% of America’s lands and waterways by 2030. This Act may not seem like an enormous leap, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction towards fulfilling this goal.
