Maybe you’ve already voted absentee or maybe you dropped off your ballot at your local country clerk’s office. If you’re ready to march to the polls tomorrow, here’s some songs to get you ready to make your voice be heard.
And if you’ve already voted, here’s a high five and a list of some politically-charged music for you to check out.
“Stop!” Against Me
Against Me!’s album New Wave came out as the historic 2008 Presidential Election was looming. “Stop!” was released as a single and there were two versions of the music video- one more ‘standard’ band performance version and one for “Rock The Vote”.
“Wrong Generation” FEVER 333
We could really put the entire discography of FEVER 333 on this list.
Their latest release is the 2020 EP Wrong Generation makes the short and simple point with the title track- “Listen up. You fucked with the wrong generation.”
“You Make Me Sick” Anti-Flag
Anti-Flag’s album 20/20 Vision was released back in January 2020 and, while Anti-Flag has never been quiet about politics, 20/20 Vision pulled out all of the stops and then some. “You Make Me Sick” turns from a sing-song list to a rallying chant for those who feel directly disgusted.
“Fuck You Donald Trump” Sharptooth
The song title speaks for itself.
“Walking In The Snow” Run The Jewels
Run The Jewels’ latest album, RTJ4, was set to be released on June 5, 2020, but due to the protests across the United States in the wake of police brutality and the deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Ahmaud Arbery, they released the album two days earlier with the statement, “Fuck it, why wait. The world is infested with bullshit so here’s something raw to listen to while you deal with it all. We hope it brings you some joy. Stay safe and hopeful out there and thank you for giving 2 friends the chance to be heard and do what they love. With sincere love and gratitude, Jaime + Mike”
“Franco Un-American (NOFX cover)” MXPX
The original version of “Franco Un-American” was by NOFX as part of their 2003 album The War on Errorism. Fellow punks MXPX released an updated cover of the song on July 1, 2019, and instead of talking about Michael Moore and saving the whales they’re singing about reproductive rights, seeing kids in cages on television, and being depressed after reading YouTube comments.
“Wonderful Hell” War On Women
War On Women’s third full-length album Wonderful Hell was just released on October 30, 2020. The lyric video for the title track opens with the image of a composition notebook reading “#VOTE” across the top. War On Women are known for their tongue-in-cheek merch that call out certain other items by brandishing “Make America Feminist For Once”.
“Fuck Tha Police” N.W.A.
Need I say more?
“RIse, Rebel, Resist” Otep
I’ve touched on punk and I’ve touched on rap so here’s the part for my fellow metalheads.
“Rise, Rebel, Resist” is the blistering opening track from Otep’s 2009 album Smash the Control Machine. Lead vocalist Otep Shamaya is a open lesbian and animal advocate who even spoke at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Their 2018 album was entitled KULT 45 and was entirely middle-fingers-up to the current administration.
“Make America Hate Again” Thy Art Is Murder
You know it’s bad when an Australian band is writing songs about it, too.
Thy Art Is Murder have touched on political and religious topics throughout their discography, but 2019’s HumanTarget took aim at how dark and cruel the situations have become and the single “Make America Hate Again” makes it clear with lyrics such as, “I’m done with pacifism. You can’t debate with demons.”
