After a long hard battle to free pop singer Britney Spears from her conservatorship, she can at least breathe a sigh of relief. Accountant and director Jason Rubin has been chosen as Britney’s conservator in lieu of her abusive father, James. However, this small step could not have been taken without her sister Jamie Lynn Spears.
In an interview with E! News, Jamie explains her reasoning behind backing her sister: “We are in a time of crisis and [James] has absolute control over Britney’s money and Healthcare decisions. This was not in my sister’s best interests. Their relationship was tainted by [James’s] mistrust of her, his coercion of her, his ‘bartering’ with her over what she can and cannot do for whatever reward or punishment he is willing to mete out, his constant threats, and his decision-making over all aspects of her life.”
Jamie discusses James’s history of abuse stating that his actions were “appalling and inexcusable” Examples given include forcing Britney to break up with her boyfriend Kevin Federline and abusing their young child thereafter. According to Jodi Montgomery, one of Britney’s conservators, the actions of her father left Britney and Kevin’s child mentally scarred and that “Their father-daughter relationship is not psychologically healthy”. Jamie consented to this notion.
Jamie also discusses James’s concern about Britney’s medical care. She recalls her father force feeding her potentially lethal medicine that Britney did not trust-an action she deemed as “completely inappropriate”. “James cannot put my sister’s interests before his own and seeing her being forced into medications by doctors and psychologists was like living in custody for her”, said Jamie. “He had always viewed Britney like a racehorse and felt he needed to treat her as one”.
Jamie ordered the court to review some of the documents to help free her sister from her father’s dictator-like control. “This conservatorship was meant to be a last resort”, Jamie notes, “so this whole delemma seems a bit odd”. When Britney was questioned about these events, she broke down in tears saying “Too much control…too, too much!”
Britney and Jamie are now calling for not only an end to Britney’s conservatorship, but for her father to be charged with abuse. Jamie states she could practically see her sister’s mental breakdown since the conservatorship began and pleads for relief.
