Impromptu freewriting is essentially writing whatever comes to mind without putting the pen down or staring at our laptop. Our fingers are constantly in motion, pressing away on the keys even if the topic we are discussing is silly or makes no sense. For example, we are impromptu freewriting this article now, which is why our word choice isn’t as well pieced together. And as we type, we are deciding exactly what to type about. Right now, our brains are generating topics to discuss but in the meantime, we are typing about anything that’s on our minds right now.

Um…..right now, we are deciding what to eat for lunch. There is leftover pizza in the refridgerator. We ordered pizza from a new shop this time and, while we preferred the previous shop, the tomato sauce definitely tasted different-in a good way. Maybe we should write an article about pizza. But first, we need to conduct research or think back to our previous memeories.

This is exactly what makes impromptu freewriting so effective-by typing about a random topic without stopping, we are forced to generate ideas which, not only inspires us to write, but also presents a topic to write about: in this case, pizza. We can expand on the ideas that we improvised writing and form a coherent article. And because the topic came naturally, it should quite simplistic to generate ideas.

So next time you are inflicted with writer’s block, try writing about anything. Literally, look at any object in the room and write about it. You will almost certainly gain motivation and further expand on the ideas. Stop researching and start writing from the heart.
