From talk show host Tom Synder to James Cordon himself, the Late Late Show has been entertaining and informing viewers about society since its debut in 1996. It’s broadway and celebrity appearances along with relatability has enthralled viewers, distinguishing it from other talk shows. However, with the inclusion of celebrities comes a higher price and tighter budget and CBS reports that its shortage of money means that the Late Late Show with James Cordon has reached it’s finale.
Last month, CBS has aired it’s final episode of The Late Late Show with over 70 million views making it one of the most watched programs of the year thus far. This is a massive spike from the 971,000 viewers the show raked in the previous seasons. Due to Cordon’s increasing popularity, CBS had payed the host $4 million to stay on the series for at least 3 seasons before the show ended.
“Unortunately, our budget is just not sustainable”, a CBS executive told news reporter Lloyd Lee. “The show costs about $65 million to produce but our view count has only granted about $45 million. Even keeping Cordon on boar was an expense. We just cannot continue it, sadly”.
The Late Late Show with James Cordon has received over 12 Emmy nominations and won the 2019 award for Most Outstanding Interactive program, according to Lloyd. Skits such as Carpool Karaoke have been favored amongst viewers with many demanding spin-off series of simply karaoke skits. Aside from one executive, CBS has been silent on this cancellation and are unsure if a series of a similar structure will be created in the future.
