Just as the holiday songs state, it is indeed the “most wonderful time of the year”. In addition to those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings when friends come to call, the holiday songs themselves could make anyone feel jolly. With their upbeat and nostalgic nature, it’s the season for getting together as a family and reuniting with the holiday music, even as a background ambiance. But which songs are the best and most iconic for this time of year? Here is a one sentence summary of various seasonal favorites (in our humble opinion)

All I Want for Christmas is You: Way too overplayed; catchy, but not the quintessential  holiday tune

Here Comes Santa Claus: Portrays Saint Nick as a serial killer (say your prayers, cause Santa Claus comes tonight), but still a fun vibe

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer: Also overplayed and promotes bullying to boot

Santa Claus is Coming to Town: “He sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake”-creepy but otherwise still enjoyable

Feliz Navidad: Muy Bien

Last Christmas: That synth alone gives holiday vibes but the lyrics are just as iconic

Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight): Who knew a rock-and-roll song would work so well this time of year?

Santa Baby: Promoting adultery during Christmas Time? No thanks

Run Run Rudolph: Upbeat and jolly, not much else to say

Let it Snow: Fun Fact; this song was actually written during a heat wave. Still just as synonymous with the holidays as any

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus: (Same as Santa Baby)

Jingle Bells: Like it or not, it is a Christmas necessity

Jingle Bells Rock: Likely the greatest and most iconic holiday song out there; festive, nostalgic, and it mentions Jingle Bells itself

Little Drummer Boy: The people hating on this song haven’t heard Bob Seger’s version; absolute goosebumps

Do You Hear What I Hear: Whitney Houston’s version is the best, otherwise it’s kind of forgetful

Carol of the Bells: Anything with Christmas bells is festive enough, and this is no exception

One More Sleep: Nice song and very relatable with Leona Lewis counting down the days until Christmas

Holly Jolly Christmas: Recognized more for the “jolly” instrumental than the lyrics

Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer: More of a guilty pleasure of ours, the song is just too catchy and full of holiday spirit not to enjoy it

Believe (Josh Groban): Not only is the Polar Express the most underrated holiday movie, but Groban’s voice is just too underappreciated; this song is a masterpiece

Joy to The World: Instantly puts us in a jolly mood and reminds Christians of the true meaning of Christmas

It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year: Up there with Jingle Bells Rock as the best, Andy’s voice itself is nostalgic

Rocking Around the Christmas Tree: A classic holiday banger

Up on The Housetop: Not played enough, and Gene Autry’s voice here is beaming with holiday joy

Fairytale of New York: A very accurate representation of the holidays and gives our family an excuse to use foul language when singing along

Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time:  Unlike Last Christmas, this has way too much synth and the lyrics are kind of bland.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas: The lyrics are true to its title, a pleasant listen

Do They Know It’s Christmas: Except for the ending, this song is boring

12 Days of Christmas: A favorite among Christmas carolers and for good reason

Christmas Canon (Tran-Siberian Orchestra): Just beautiful, even if it’s not technically a Christmas song, we would never switch the station if this came on

The First Noel: Probably the most Traditional song out there, still not the most memorable

Merry Christmas Everyone: Just as much of an 80s holiday classic as Last Christmas

Whose Child is This: The instrumental is the same as Greensleeves, still a nice soothing melody

There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays: It’s true, unless you’re the ones hosting the holiday party

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas: Soothing, but kind of forgetful, honestly

Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire: Another relaxing holiday classic

Sleigh Ride: Even if it’s just the instrumental, this song always makes us look forward to Winter

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas: Annoying for sure, but we can’t help but appreciate the way the child struggles to pronounce “Hippopotamouses” (is that even a word?)

Winter Wonderland: (Same as Sleigh Ride)

Snoopy’s Christmas: Very underrated

God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman: (Same as Joy to the World)

Christmas in Hollis: Well, if Rock and Roll can work in holiday music, then we suppose hip-hop can too

Frosty The Snowman: (Same as Sleigh Ride)

Happy Xmas (War is Over): Konwing the context of this song makes it all the greater

Christmas Litmas: Absolutely not, someone take this off the list right now!

Mele Kalamanka: Fun song, but kind of forgotten about and overshadowed by others

Again, everyone’s holiday opinions vary but here is a strong starter pack for this time of year. Perhaps one may prefer upbeat and infectious earworms while others prefer the mellow cozy Traditional classics. Regardless, grab a nice cup of hot cocoa and have a great holiday season with your families!
