Over the past six to seven months we have all heard the reports about colleges all over America and around the world protesting for Palestine and how Israel is handling the war. Many of the protesters have been arrested, their encampments have been closed, they have lost either their jobs or job opportunities, and last but not least they have been labeled as antisemitic.
So why are the leaders of tomorrow and citizens of the modern world against Israel and support Palestine? Why are college students being labeled as antisemitic by various groups and why so many groups are against both college students and people who support Palestine? The answer I have to these questions is religion. Yes, good old-fashioned religion. It has moved on from telling women what they can and can not do with their bodies to telling us who we should support on the international and domestic stage.
You see, many baby bombers and the last remaining remnants of World War II survivors have a blinded faith in Israel that comes from their religious beliefs. They believe that they and their descendants should stand by Israel right or wrong because they are God’s chosen people. Even if Israel is the own being looked into by the United Nations for war crimes and ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people. This is shocking to their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren generations because we see this as a human rights issue, not a religious one. We believe that if we want the world to change for the better then we must call out any injustice no matter where it led us. The thought of letting Israel ride off into the sunset on genocide and war crimes just because one of the world’s largest religious group see her as their Holy Land and God’s chosen people is outrageous. This generation sees Israel is a country just like another country on the planet. Yes, it is steeped in history, just like many other countries are steeped in history. However, there collective history among mankind should not let it be allowed to destroy a people just because they don’t like them. Israel more than another country should know better. For over 80 years ago World War II was fought to free them from a country that hated them because they were Jewish. This resulted in the Holocaust, which resulted in the deaths of 6 million Jews. So, for them to turn around and do something similar to that is heartbreaking.
In the end, with no sight of a ceasefire or an end to the war. People who are for Israel should look at the cold hard facts about what she is doing and decide on sound information, not religious dogma. For if they don’t see the light we fear that many more innocent people will be hurt and that is an outcome that no one wants to see.
