The 02Series was Studio Underd0g’s “difficult second album.” Launched in 2023 after the wild success of the brand’s colorful chronographs, it took a bold detour – reimagining the classic field watch through a decidedly British, playful lens. Inspired by a theoretical 1945 Ministry of Defence brief and the legendary Dirty Dozen watches, the original collection brought together compact proportions with an innovative multi-layer sapphire dial.
Three years later, Studio Underd0g has returned with the 02Series Gen2. While the new Nightshade (deep purple) and Red L0lly (cherry red) dials immediately command attention, the real story lies beneath the surface.
Technical Refinements That Matter
The stainless steel case keeps its notable dimensions – 37.5mm in diameter with a 46mm lug-to-lug. The overall thickness has been reduced a bit however, down to 11.5mm (from 12mm), and without the domed sapphire crystal, the case measures just 9.4mm. This slimmer profile was achieved through an overhaul of the dial and hand construction, which places the crystal closer to the display. Tighter assembly specifications by the brand’s in-house workshop, The D0ghouse, also plays a vital part in the new layout.
Inside, watch aficionados will notice even more significant upgrades. The new Sellita SW200-2 M Power+ manually wound movement takes over from the previous SW210-1. Running at 28,800 vibrations/hour, it now executes at a powerful 63-hour power reserve – an increase of 42 hours. Hacking seconds ensure precise time-setting.
Fresh Colors, Improved Legibility
The dial has been thoughtfully refined to show the minutes tracking slightly inwards for better legibility beneath the domed crystal, with a completely retooled handset. The reduced printed text has also been rebalanced to create a cleaner aesthetic.
The signature multi-layer sapphire dial remains an enchanting component of this edition. A 1mm-thick tinted sapphire layer sits above a metallic base with a sunburst pattern, creating shifting reflections through the colored sapphire – a technique first pursued on the brand’s Manhattan collaboration with Fears. Luminous Arabic numerals make this timepiece legible during evening hours.
With the debut of Nightshade and Red L0lly, the Full Mo0n and Midnight editions have been discontinued. New leather straps from The Strap Tailor complete the package, with each color featuring a unique combination.
