Despite being called the “Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, Christmas can be quite stressful. Part of the reason for this lies in the fact that consumerism has practically dominated the holiday and we are expected to purchase Christmas gifts for an entire family. In addition to being quite exorbitant, there always seems to be that one (or perhaps more) family member(s) who seem to have everything and, as a result, you are unsure what to buy. If you are one of those people struggling to find a Christmas gift for that someone, you have clicked on the right article. Here are some ideas that we came up with:
Cologne/Perfume: Everybody likes to walk around with an appealing and noticeable fragrance surrounding them. Cologne and perfume will certainty get the attention of women and men, respectively. For men, we recommend Green Irish Tweed cologne which, according to perfumer Oliver Creed, was worn by celebrities such as Kodak Black, Carey Grant, and Clint Eastwood. Reviewers have agreed that Green Irish Tweed cologne smells very fresh like Lemon Verbena, and Violet Leaf-scents that women are attracted to, but does not make it “too girly” to wear around men. As for perfume, Coco Mademoiselle Eau de Parfum, is recommended for women. According to reporter Sharon Feiereisen, “This fragrance, meant to channel the young spirit of Coco Chanel, targets younger Chanel fans.” It has a very feminine scent and will certainly attract the attention of both males and females in the area.
New Video Game for Their Device: If the person you are struggling to find a gift for enjoys video games, simply buy them a new video game. First, make sure that you know what gaming device they own (Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Wii U, etc.), then search online for top selling games for that device. Even if the person has not played the game before, they can at least give it a shot. Ideas include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Super Mario Odyssey (Switch), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze or Splatoon (Wii U), The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D or Pokémon Sun and Moon (3DS), and Grand Theft Auto or Battlefield (Xbox). Regardless of how old the device is or how familiar the person is with the game, they will still appreciate the thought and chance of having a new video game to enjoy.
Voice Translator Pocket Device: Have you ever had to listen to someone who speaks very broken English? While we respect all people regardless of language or ethnicity, nobody can deny that it is quite frustrating to have a conversation when the person you are speaking to speaks primarily a different language than you do. This is where the Voice Translator Pocket Device comes in handy. The person can speak into the device in their native language and it translates his/her words into your language. For example, if you speak only English and the person you are speaking to speaks mainly Spanish, he/she can talk Spanish into the device and it will come out English. To respond, simply talk in English and the device will translate your words into Spanish. This makes having conversations like these much easier and is the perfect gift for someone who works with somebody who speaks a native language.
Belgian Waffle Maker: Everybody loves waffles, and the Belgian Waffle Maker eliminates the hassle of cooking them from scratch. Simply pour the batter inside the waffle maker, press the lid down and, in about one minute, the waffles are ready to eat. You can even put your own toppings inside the waffle batter such as syrup, berries, or chocolate chips, and the Belgian Waffle Maker will still cook the waffle to perfection. According to food critic Lauren Allen, Belgian waffles are superior to regular waffles in that “they are thicker and often harder than regular waffles because they are made with a waffle iron that has deeper grids. Belgian waffle batter is also made a little differently from regular waffles, often with egg whites to make the batter rich and fluffy.” Whether cooking Belgian or regular waffles, there is no better breakfast cooker to get than the waffle maker.
Puzzle Book: Here, “puzzle book” has a very general context. Puzzle books can range from crossword puzzles to word searches to brain teasers. According to the Harvard School of Psychology, these types of puzzles are an engaging way to improve executive functioning, thus keeping your mind young. It also improves our long term memory and our attention to detail-two functions of our brain that deteriorate as we grow older. Also, there is just something satisfying about cracking sudoku puzzles or solving crossword puzzles that make us want to do it more. Therefore, puzzle books are perfect for older people who seem to have everything and always seem to say: “Don’t drive yourself crazy getting us a gift.”
Fuzzy Puzz Glasses: Also known as Groucho glasses, this novelty disguise was popularized by comedian Groucho Marx in his movies for providing a comedic effect amongst audiences. The disguise consists of oversized eyeglasses, bushy eyebrows and mustache, and a large nose. This disguise is sure to add humor to your holiday season (Lord knows we need humor this year) and is also very cheap: about $5.00 in Party City. It’s a fitting gift for that one prankster in your family who could use another way to make the family laugh.
Liberty Lift: Now, we are not discriminating against older people, but it is usually difficult for senior citizens to stand up. With the liberty lift, however, people can grab the device and easily pull themselves up. While Liberty Lift only weighs 1 pound, it can lift people up to 400 pounds. The handles are also textured for a “no-slip” grip. The Liberty Lift also has positive reviews from AMR Paramedics such as Mike Battistella who calls Liberty Lift “the best lifting device I have ever used!” Like puzzle books, the Liberty Lift is another gift for older people who could use it at their age (again, we are not discriminating, we are only helping)
Blue Light Blocking Glasses: As far as you know, technology has been advancing quite rapidly, showing no signs of slowing down. As such, humans spend more time each year staring at an electronic device. The problem with staring into these devices is that, according to sleepfoundation.org, electronics emit a blue light which “delays the release of sleep inducing melatonin, increase alertness, and reset the body’s internal clock to a later schedule”. While increasing vigilance may sound like a positive thing for our body, it still disrupts our sleep schedule and sleep is important for our bodies to fuel our immune system and improve positivity. With these glasses, however, that somebody in the family can look at their electronics as long as they wish and their sleep will not be disturbed as these glasses absorb the blue light so it does not get in our eyes. Now, there is no need to turn the brightness down on your device (though high brightness lowers battery percentage quicker)
Whether getting a gift for your family member, or for your boyfriend or girlfriend, or for their family, we hope these suggestions provided you with ideas of what to get them, even if you have no idea what they like. If all else fails, then go for the predictable money or gift card present. However, Christmas should be a bit more special than that-let’s show it by giving true gifts and celebrating with others no matter how difficult it is this year. Happy holidays, everyone!
