It’s been a tough few years to be a Lorde fan – Ella Yelich O’Connor, who rose to stardom with “Royals” in 2013, hasn’t released any music since June 2017’s Melodrama, which received a nomination for the Grammy Album of the Year. Luckily, her listeners won’t have to wait much longer!
On Monday, Lorde updated her website with a photo that appears to be the cover art for her next single, “Solar Power,” along with the phrase “Arriving in 2021 … Patience is a Virtue,” which seems to be a thank you to fans who have been anticipating her comeback.

Fans first suspected new music was on the way when Lorde was announced as a performer at the 2022 Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona, Spain. Soon after the lineup announcement, rumors on Twitter suggested that she’d be releasing two songs called “Solar Power” and “Mood Ring” in the coming weeks.
Lorde previously addressed her third album in a December 2020 conversation with Blackbird Spyplane, explaining, “I really take my time, and I like to know the whole universe, the whole cinematic universe for what I’m making, so I’m in that process right now.”
That cinematic quality is what draws so many fans to her music – each song creates a universe of its own, with bold settings and tiny details engrained in them. For example, her fan-favorite 2013 track “400 Lux” describes driving through a residential neighborhood, young love, and buying someone orange juice.
It looks like we’ll have to wait at least a few weeks to see what Lorde has in store for us, but in the meantime, you can sign up for her email list to stay up to date!
