Trayvon Martin’s 29th Birthday Reveals Just How Racist White America Remains

Martin’s birthday and death day both fall in February, the month set aside for white Americans to learn more about Black History. Black Lives Matter is the latest movement to find Afro-Americans fighting for racial equity, this time around, it relates directly to the broken criminal justice system. Martin’s death, which included a recording of his screams for help in a predominantly white neighborhood in Florida shocked the world. His murderer, neighborhood watchmen George Zimmerman walked away from the crimes. Stand your ground is the policy in Florida that protects people like George, and kills people like Trayvon. The law went on the books in 2004 and became law in 2005. It has been twenty years. Here are how some of the commentary from white users on X.

This user responded to a known Black brand with images depicting Martin as a criminal. In their caption, they said this is what racists show you to rile you up. This user is attempting to make light of the very real racism Black men women and children face in the criminal justice system. Zimmerman was not a law enforcement agent. During the 9-11 call, he was told to not go after Martin multiple times. He still shot and killed him.

The same graphic is repeatedly used by other X users.

This user opted to not use the photo but respond to a memorial collage stating that these photos were only being used to show his innocence. The user defends themself by saying the entire Black Lives Matter movement is disingenuous. Trayvon Martin is the first of thousands of hashtags used to show how differently Black children are criminalized in a system built to target their actions as crimes.
Another trend that is being watched is how the entirety of the Black Lives Matter movement will be recorded in history. This user used a photo of Patrisse C. to claim the movement has done nothing to help the down trodden community. The user is referencing the BLM movement as a fraudulent movement of the Black community.

Even when a white user explains that they understand what happened in Martin’s case, the backlash is the same.

Rest assured, the defenders are out on X to back up the nonsense as well.

Activist and Criminal Justice reform advocate Tahyira Savanna shared multiple pieces of content surround Trayvon’s trigger to white America. ”Trayvon could have been my son.” – President Barack Obama
This user tried to be clever and stated that we should be working to help the troubled youth. Calling Black people and their children “troubled” is the basis of white privilege. Black Lives Matter is about living with Black skin freely in the United States. Not being able to be gunned down because the person killing you knows your life will be deemed not enough. Killing Black Americans and throwing them in prison goes back to Slavery.

The work to normalized an open conversation about the treatment of white Americans vs the treatment of Black Americans has yet to happen. Since Slavery, we have been fighting for the same issues. Is it time to pull up seats at the table?
