YUNGBLUD always knows how to keep rock and alternative music lovers on their toes, and following the 9-minute “Hello Heaven, Hello” earlier this year, he’s switching things up with the playful, jaded, and optimistic anthem “Lovesick Lullaby.” The song and video draw from classic Brit-pop and UK pop culture, even recreating a 1982 Maxell commercial, and YUNGBLUD wears iconic British designers Burberry, Fred Perry, and Sir Tom Baker. It’s a celebration of where Dominic Harrison comes from that also proves his own worthiness of a spot in discussions about the UK’s musical legends.
Each verse of the song starts off on a slightly frustrated, melancholic note: “I feel sh*t when I wake up… I got things on my mind that my mind don’t like.” “I always pick the wrong people, they make me feel like I’m sick in the head.” “I bought some hash from a dealer in a pathetic attempt to impress my friends, but they didn’t like it.” Eventually, YUNGBLUD makes his way to accepting his less-than-ideal circumstances and admitting he wants to “feel good emotions” instead of letting himself wallow in the darker parts of life. The song becomes a powerful statement on free will and taking charge of your situation – we can all choose to embrace the good things and chase better experiences.
Making this song was a f*cking party and you can hear that on the recording. [I tried to] let my subconscious do a lot of the talking and then make sense of my words the following afternoon in a kitchen, hungover, eating fish and chips with a cup of tea. I’ve been on a journey trying to find meaning in different places all over the world, for which I am forever grateful, but it felt as though my feet left the ground a little too much and I had to bring myself back… to British music, to British art and culture.
