OZONE PARK, N.Y. — Tonight, family members, friends, neighbors, and fellow service members are expected to gather in Ozone Park, Queens, to honor the life of Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad, a 28-year-old Trinidadian immigrant, U.S. Army soldier, and beloved community member whose life was cut short during an Iranian missile attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan on July 17.
Initially listed as missing following the attack, military officials later confirmed that Rampersad had died while serving her country. She was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade, stationed in Ansbach, Germany.
Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Rampersad immigrated to the United States as a young child and was raised in Ozone Park, Queens. A graduate of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, she enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2019 after years of aspiring to serve. Friends and family remember her as compassionate, courageous, and deeply committed to protecting others. They described her as a “gentle giant” who loved her family fiercely, played the drums in church, and never hesitated to stand up for those who could not defend themselves.
As news of her death spread, the Ozone Park community rallied around the Rampersad family. Neighbors lined her block with American flags, left porch lights on in solidarity, and shared stories of a young woman whose smile and humility touched everyone she met. Public officials have also called for a street and school to be named in her honor, recognizing the sacrifice she made in service to the nation.
Tonight’s candlelight vigil is expected to bring together residents from across Queens, members of the Trinidadian and Caribbean communities, veterans, faith leaders, and supporters to celebrate Sgt.
