Maybe I’m broken. Maybe I’ve grown too accustomed to modern action movies. Maybe I’m not being fair to this movie. But in my defense. This movie isn’t very good. Which is weird. Because I feel like I hear people talking about how great this movie is all the time? I mean, this movie is based on a Tom Clancy novel and starring Harrison Ford. I should have by all accounts loved this movie. But instead, I was bored.
I wanted to like this movie. Harrison Ford? Willem Defoe? James Early Jones? Three fantastic actors. But for some reason… This movie is just not for me.
For a movie that advertises itself as an action film it has a lot of scenes of people sitting around and talking. Which again… I recognize that I’ve been ruined by modern action movies but still. When your two-and-a-half-hour-long action movie is two hours of political discussions maybe it’s time to rethink your story.
I wish I had more to say about this movie but I was truly bored. I’m sorry if you love this movie but I just could not get into it. At first I thought that maybe that this was just the style of actions movies at the time but Speed (1994) came out the same year, and that’s a great action movie.
Again, I wish I had more to say but I don’t. If any of you have seen the movie and love it, please tell me. I’d love to hear how I’m wrong and what you love about it. I’m willing to admit my own faults here. Maybe I just wasn’t paying enough attention when watching. Maybe I was in the wrong mood. Maybe I set my expectations incorrectly. It’s just, right now, I just don’t care for it.
