Dune (1984) – I Don’t Know….

I love sci-fy. I love fantasy. Star Wars is one of my favorite movie franchises. So, it stands to reason that I should like Dune (1984). After all, the book it is based on, “Dune” by Frank Herbert, is often credited as inspiring Star Wars, as well as many other science fiction staples. This should be the movie for me. But it isn’t. It’s super boring and confusing. I’m sure the book is great but this movie… Oof. The first five minutes is basically two characters listing off a bunch of character names, places, and concepts that we as the audience are then expected to remember for the rest of the movie. Well, spoiler alert. It didn’t work. It just confused me. I honestly don’t have much more to say about the movie because there isn’t much more to say. The beginning of the movie is just so slow. It crawls for so long before anything remotely exciting happens. It’s all just conversations that essentially information dumps without any real context or reference for what they’re talking about. I will say though, the production design is incredible. All the costumes and scenery look really cool and interesting but the dialogue and the plot just couldn’t hold me. If you love this movie or the books, I’d love to hear why. Should I give the movie a second chance? Is the movie just a poor adaptation and I should give the book a try? Please let me know.

  1. Even as a Lynch fan, this movie turns to mush despite great production; I’d wait for the new version, if it ever arrives…
