In Memoriam: Rapper Biz Markie Loses Long Fight With Diabetes, Rest In Power to All Our Poets

He was 57 years old.

The rapper, born Marcel Theo Hall, died Friday in Baltimore.

He had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in his late 40s and said that he lost 140 pounds in the years that followed.

“Just a Friend” was his first and only Top 10 hit, but Biz Markie was more than a one-hit wonder. If you love the earworm chorus of that song, turn on the chest-puffing “Nobody Beats the Biz,” or his ode to mining for nose gold, “Pickin’ Boogers.”

Music rest in power rest in power
