Your Ultimate Winter Style Guide, Inspired By New Yorkers

With the change of seasons, so should a change of your wardrobe, whether it’s just cycling out your favorite warm-weather pieces for something cozier or trying out a new style entirely. And what better inspiration than the fashion capital of New York? Whether it’s uptown or downtown, New Yorkers are constantly delivering the most unique outfits that will motivate you to take your own looks to the next level. Here are three ladies who are always blowing us away with their style, as well as some tips to channel their taste!

Going Bold with Abby Silverman

As researched by Karen Millen, green is the most popular color for New Yorkers to wear to holiday parties, but that doesn’t mean you have to walk around looking like a Christmas tree! See Abby Silverman, the digital creative director of Cosmopolitan, for an example – she recently paired a green Burberry coat with a zebra print top, black pants, and a bright red bag.

The key to the bolder vibes here is that despite the eye-catching zebra pattern, the “base layer” of the outfit is a neutral black and white, while the deeper green stands out without jumping out quite like a brighter shade would. And with the main parts of the outfit staying somewhat muted, the bright red bag complements the green shade while getting its own shining moment, without clashing with another show-stopper.

Rocking Neutrals with Anna Monts

Now, on the flipside, knowing how to pair neutral tones is essential for that model-off-duty look! Anna is definitely one of the best inspirations in this department, always finding ways to add visual interest even with a more subtle palette. Say goodbye to drab beige outfits and say hello to something elevated and sleek.

Nailing a neutral color scheme is all about playing with texture, dimension, and different shades of one tone. For example, this look works so well because of the contrast between the ribbed, fitted black top, fluffy jacket, and slick (p)leather pants. Meanwhile, the jacket and pants complement each other because they’re in the same color family.

And a little bonus tip: if you’re going for warm shades like brown and tan, gold accessories will give your look an elegant flair, especially if the rest of the outfit has gold or bronze buttons/zippers. This TikTok shows off how coordinated it looks and how the different tones pop together!

Sophisticated Layering with XOFashionInspo_

Finally, we have to acknowledge the harsh reality that New York is… freaking cold in the winter. But that doesn’t mean you can’t look cute when you’re out on the town! XO’s styling videos capture an old money vibe a lá Gossip Girl while showing you how you can stay warm with just the right tactful layering.

One essential you need: fleece tights in your skin tone, which you can layer underneath normal tights to double up while looking polished and proper. Throw on a fitted, neutral top before putting on a sweater for another layer of warmth that won’t feel bulky or uncomfortable, and add a cape on top for extra coziness without that awkward, I-can’t-lift-my-arms feeling you might get while wearing a thicker coat.
