Ramadan is a month-long holy event celebrated by Muslims around the world.

In 2024, Ramadan will last from March 10 to April 9.

Each day, from pre-sunrise to  sunset, participants fast, pray, and cultivate a spiritual discipline. By the end of observations, members will have read the Qu’ran in full.

Members of the community who cannot fast receive an exemption. This group often includes the elderly, the sick, pregnant women, and menstruating persons.

Breakfast occurs in the early  morning. The day’s fast is broken by a small meal of dates and water. Then, dinner late at night precedes an evening of prayers and the Taraweeh.

This routine continues for the duration of Ramadan to purify the body and the spirit. Because the Muslim calendar follows a Lunar cycle, the celebrations vary in time from year to year. Each community adapts their local traditions to the timing and seasons of each cycle.

During Ramadan, Muslims aim to develop a closer relationship with Allah. In addition to prayer and fasting, Muslims complete charitable works to nurture a healthy relationship with the community.

At the end of the month, community members join together for Eid ul-Fitr. The festival in includes a large meal, games, and gifts from parents to children.
