Whispers in the aether say that the likely vice presidential choice for Donald Trump is Marco Rubio. Protestations as to the correctness of Trump’s choice or even the accuracy of the claims aside, the bird is the word. As such, we will write this article on Mr. Rubio to determine what he might be like as a VP and potential presidential stand-in if the circumstances warrant it. Let’s… hope not.

This will be another one of those “no birth time” charts, thusly, we only have the planetary aspects and the planets in the signs, which is just fine with me as the aspects are the bread and butter anyway.

Marco Antonio Rubio is an attorney and career politician, getting his start on the city commission of West Miami, Florida, working his way up through the Florida House to the US House of Representatives, and finally as a US Senator. This is a fairly standard step-by-step growth up the ladder in the halls of power, stamping his career with a trademark slow and steady progression. This is important to note as we move into his first astrological aspect.

Sun conjunct Saturn immediately popped out at me when glancing at Rubio’s chart. This is the type of position that definitionally makes a person “strongly Saturnian.” By this, I mean that, while everyone has Saturn in their astrology chart, having Saturn in certain places makes him very prominent. Therefore, the person possessing it will be more influenced by Saturn’s archetypal traits and hence express them through the person and throughout their life.

So what are Saturn’s traits? Well, slow and steady progression is his big theme, in the most positive sense. He can also hinder, restrict, and obstruct. But, he represents hard work, gains over time, patience, and hard-won achievements as well. Therefore, Saturn represents what is best in life. We value more that which we had to fight hard to attain. And while some people have a meteoric rise (often followed by a fall just as swift), Sun conjunct Saturn in Marco Rubio is the type to build gradually over years.

Though hardly just a garden variety stick in the mud Saturn, the Grand Trine (three planets connected at 120-degree angles) between Marco’s Sun, Mars, and Uranus is a definite indicator of livening things up. Sun trine Mars is an action go-getter type. The authentic self of the Sun is seamlessly integrated with the action and warrior energy of Mars. So, Rubio has no problem spoiling for a fight or standing up for his beliefs. However, the trine aspect makes the native have a much more sporting nature to them. They don’t like dirty tactics and prefer to win something fair and square.

That same aforementioned Mars is trine to Uranus. And wham. This can make someone fiercely independent and a bit unpredictable. Again, with the trine, you can hardly feel the person shift from one gear to the other. It’s just “there.” They don’t have to try. So you’ll find Rubio will suddenly dart off in his own direction whenever he pleases. It also makes him hungry for excitement. He can’t stand sitting around doing nothing and hates being bored.

So, then that third planet involved, the Sun, is connected to both of these. With the Sun trine Uranus, you get an extra kick of Uranian energy. Mars trine Uranus is more than enough. But add Sun trine Uranus, and you have someone who can turn on a dime and brings the element of surprise to bear when he chooses to. Though this may not necessarily shine through in his public persona, which is largely governed by his Sun conjunct Saturn aspect first and foremost, a lot of this wild Uranian energy is being utilized behind the scenes in his political maneuverings or family and social life.

Believe it or not, Rubio does pretty well with the ladies! Venus square Mars is always an indicator of this and you can find it in the charts of many attractive people. In fact, any contact between Venus and Mars is considered pretty sexy, but the square causes tension between the two, so the sparks will fly. But if you need any evidence of this, look no further than Marco’s wife, Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio, a former professional cheerleader for the Miami Dolphins and quite a looker herself.

Then there’s Moon sextile Pluto. And any time you have the Moon touching Pluto, you’re going to have an intense emotional life. Fortunately, Rubio possesses the sextile, which is two planets getting along pretty well. But, Pluto doesn’t actually get along well with anyone. In the Greco-Roman pantheon, Pluto is “the god other gods don’t want to see.” Living in his subterranean underworld, he is far removed from the beauty and heights of Mount Olympus.

But Pluto is powerful, and he also bestows his own special breed of gifts. Similar to Saturn, you must work and suffer a bit for them. So, Rubio often finds catharsis through crisis, making him into a better version of himself and stronger coming out the other side. In this way, Pluto is the phoenix bird personified, burning away all that is unnecessary to leave room for new growth.

And so there it is folks. Sometimes the people we may project as the biggest villains turn out to be rather ordinary. There is nothing sinister about Rubio’s chart, as there truly is about Vladimir Putin or Xi Jinping, for example. And although my list of aspects isn’t exhaustive here, the picture is fairly complete. What comes into focus is someone who is reasonably normal. Let’s hope he brings some of that cautious and wise Saturn energy to politics if he ends up as Trump’s VP.
