They’re back! The Muppets are back! With everything you already love about them. Quirky humor! Fun songs! Graduating college! Wait… what? Huh… uh… Moving on. Celebrity cameos! Tear jerking moments! Oh… wait… Now that I think about it… this one is a bit different.
Let me start off by saying, I love the Muppets! I also really like this movie. But… it is pretty different. The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) is a movie following The Muppets as they graduate college and all move to New York City to produce a musical written by Kermit.
This movie does have everything you come to expect from the Muppets. Like the humor. At one point, Kermit is in the hospital and his nurse checks out his arms and legs, only to then say “No doubt about it; you’ve got amnesia.” And that’s just fun. At risk of explaining the joke, amnesia has nothing to do with arms and legs but somehow that tells her what he has. It’s very funny, and only the tip of the ice berg when it comes to the humor. It also has tons of celebrity cameos! It has such cameos as Liza Minnelli, Joan Rivers, Brooke Shields, Elliott Gould and those are only the ones my dumb millennial brain recognized. Bert and Ernie (from Sesame Street) also have a speaking cameo as well! And that’s just fun as hell. It also has some very fun musical numbers such as “Together Again”, “You Can’t Take No for an Answer” and “I’m Gonna Always Love You”. All very fun songs sung in a style only the Muppets can.
But, this movie is also very different from what you might expect. First of all, the song “Saying Goodbye”, is heart breaking. Its about all the Muppets going their separate ways after graduating from college. I was not expecting that. It really caught me off guard. But, its also a really good song. I was just not expecting something so heart breakingly sad in the first thirty minutes of a Muppets movie. Also, as I just said, this movie opens with the Muppets graduating from college. Which is wild. I was not expecting that. ALSO, as I alluded to before, in the third act of this movie, Kermit goes missing because he is hit by a car and gets amnesia. WHAT?!!? That was a left turn I was not expecting. But still, I can’t not love anything involving the Muppets.
If you want to watch this wild ride of a Muppets movie, it is on Amazon Prime in the US. But now, I’m going to gush about some SPOILERS. OK? Don’t read any more if you want to be completely fresh.
MISS PIGGY AND KERMIT GET MARRIED AT THE END! AND IT IS EVERYTHING! The Wedding is part of the musical they put on at the end of the movie but Miss Piggy brings out a real Minister and they get married. With all the Muppets, and some Sesame Street characters, in the audience as well! It is adorable and the music is SO good and… AH! Miss Piggy and Kermit sing a song called “He’ll Make Me Happy” as Miss Piggy walks down the aisle and I’m getting teary eyed just typing this… I need a minute…. OK. I’m fine. But, isn’t that what we all want? UH, this movie, I swear. How did I never hear that they got married? Why did it not stay as canon in The Muppets universe? I need answers! Anyway, its canon to me. I give the movie 8 rat waiters out of 10. I love The Muppets!
