The Great Muppet Caper (1981) confirms something for me. The best Muppets movies are the ones where they don’t play themselves. Now, I love all Muppets content but, the best ones are the ones where the Muppets play characters. In this one, Kermit and Fozzie play identical twin brother reporters, yes you read that right, who team up with their photographer, played by Gonzo, to catch jewel thieves.
This movie just proves to me that the best Muppets movies are the ones where they play different characters. They are still their normal lovable selves but he isn’t Kermit the Frog. He’s Kermit the reporter. This, along with Muppets Treasure Island and Muppets Christmas Carol just show that the Muppets tend to strive when they deviate from their norm.
But, don’t worry, they don’t deviate too much. This movie still has a lot of what people love about the Muppets. Fun songs, celebrity cameos, quirky humor, and, my personal favorite, several shots of the Muppets riding bikes with their weird wonky looking legs.
The best joke of the movie has to be when Kermit is sitting on a park bench and a father and daughter walk by and say:
Daughter: Look Dad *points at Kermit*, a bear!
Dad: No sweetie. That’s a frog. Bears wear hats.
I just find that joke delightful.
What I’m trying to say is that if you like the Muppets, you’ll like this movie. And if you don’t, you might still like this movie. It’s a good movie. Stream it on Disney+.
