Grammy-winning hip-hop artist 2 Chainz has recently released the dramatic short film Red Clay at SeriesFest this week, followed up by another viewing at the Atlanta Film Festival on May 3rd. The movie marks the mogul’s first foray into the film world and as an executive producer on the project, he brings the same raw energy and no-holds-barred storytelling that defines his music. When asked how his music career and emerging film career interest, the hip hop star was upfront about how music has shaped his creative process other areas of artistry:

“I tell stories through my music, always hoping people feel empowered to overcome anything. ‘Red Clay’ is an extension of that. Atlanta is full of resilience, and bringing Nook and Bub’s story to life—everyday folks fighting to survive—means everything to me.”

A Teen Angst Amidst Addiction and Poverty

Grit, power, and resilience all act as part of the narrative in many of 2 Chainz‘ biggest musical hits and when I asked him about Red Clay and what audiences can expect, he gave a brief overview of what viewers will take away from the drama:

“[It] is just from actually inside the belly of the beast, it’s very detailed, takes place in the early 2000s in Atlanta. It deals with different paradoxes with mother and son. it has some very cool moments in it, it has some emotional elements.” – 2 Chainz

Set in 2003 Atlanta, Red Clay centers on Nook (played by Christopher A’mmanuel), a teenager caught between hope and hardship. Living with a mother in the throes of addiction, Nook dreams of escaping the ghetto together with his close friend and confidant, Bub (played by Jaylan Ragin). The film captures takes viewers on a journey that covers life in poverty and the constant conundrum of family. Rutina Wesley (Queen Sugar, True Blood, The Last of Us) rounds out the main cast and brings an authentic and emotional depth to the role.

The Creative Team Behind Red Clay

Director Christian Nolan Jones previously achieved acclaim at the Atlanta Film Festival for Glitter Ain’t GoldRed Clay brings together a powerful creative team. Actor Omar Epps not only co-wrote the script with 2 Chainz, but also served as co-executive producer. Fans of the actor will now be able to see his artistic talents behind the camera for this project, and Epps spoke to what it would reveal about communities of color:

“My inspiration to write this film came from the need to unpack brutal truths and showcase the complexities of why Black and brown communities normalize trauma. It’s my hope to inspire conversations which motivate people to have more grace and compassion towards one another.”

2 Chainz Expands His Artistic Reach

With Atlanta as the current hotbed of cinematic output, it only makes sense that 2 Chainz is venturing into the industry. Having previously dabbled in acting with appearances on BMF and the movie The Enforcer, Red Clay is his most ambitious screen project yet, and fans will be able to take in his storytelling in a new way. Red Clay seamlessly blends his passion for music and storytelling on screen, proving that his creative trajectory isn’t confined to one medium—it’s self-directed, intentional, and evolving. This move solidifies his place not just as a hip-hop icon, but as a multifaceted artist with a vision that extends far beyond the studio.
