Project Power (2020) – Filling the Superhero Movie Drought

I love superhero movies. I love Marvel, DC, or any other kind of superhero movie I can get my hands on. But, because of the COVID-19, there has been a superhero movie drought. We were supposed to have seen both Black Widow and Wonder Woman 1984 by now, but, rightfully, they were pushed back. I’m glad they were pushed back. We all need to take the pandemic seriously, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t missing my superheroes. The last DC one was Birds of Prey back in February, and the last Marvel one was all the way back in July 2019 with Spider-man: Far From Home. I’ve needed that superhero itch scratched for months. Netflix’s new movie Project Power, does just that.

Netflix original movies can be pretty hit or miss. Sometimes, they are only put on Netflix because the studio doesn’t think a theater release would be profitable. So, naturally, I was pretty skeptical going in. But I ended up really liking it.

Project Power is a Netflix original movie staring Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Dominique Fishback. It takes place in a world where a pill is created that gives who ever takes it superpowers for five minutes. A detective (Gordon-Levitt), an ex-soldier (Foxx), and a teenage dealer of the drug (Fishback) work together to find the manufacture of the drug and stop them.

Again, being a Netflix movie, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But the visuals and special effects of the film look really good. The way they show the powers activating in people looks really cool and the CGI for the actual powers look really good too, well mostly, there is one that looks weird but overall they look great. The fight choreography and the action scenes were also pretty well executed. A lot of action movies will use a lot of quick cuts during fights, making it hard to follow what’s happening. While this film does a pretty good job of keeping the audience following the action. They way they incorporate the super powers into the action scenes also make them a lot of fun to watch.

The acting was also really good. Foxx and Gordon-Levitt are already proven actors and they ween’t phoning in their performances here. But what really got my attention was, relative newcomer, Dominique Fishback holding her own, acting with an Oscar winner, Foxx, and someone who will no doubt have one in the future, Gordon-Levitt. So, I’m really excited, after seeing this film, where her career goes next.

The movie is by no means perfect. At some points the movie feels like its dragging. I also think the movie waits too long to bring all three of the major character together. But when they do get together the movie really kicks off so, I’m not too mad about it. My last complaint is that the bad guys are just kind of there and aren’t very compelling. We as an audience are told just enough to know they should be stopped. There are a couple with cool powers but they don’t say anything and just fight. I know the movie is supposed to be about the heroes. I get that. But movie is only as strong as it’s villain. The head bad lady just gives a vague speech about the “next step in human evolution.” I just wish they were a little more interesting. But maybe that’s just me.

Ultimately, Project Power, is a pretty good way to spend two hours. It’s a pretty enjoyable movie that definitely scratches that superhero itch that I know other people have. I give it a pretty fair 6 out of 10.
