Sephora Advent Calendar Series: #1 — Are Advent Calendars Worth It? & Wild Wishes Advent Calendar by Sephora Collection

As we get closer to the holiday season, brands are going to keep coming out with exciting new deals on their products. For beauty brands, this includes rolling out advent calendars around the holidays. Advent calendars are sets of items packaged in separate boxes with instructions to open one box usually daily or weekly. Other kinds of brands also create them around the holidays to be given as gifts or something special to treat yourself. They’re typically advertised as having a higher value than what you pay for, making it seem like you’re getting a great deal. However, whether the advent calendar is from a beauty brand or not, they’re usually not worth it. In other words, many of them don’t actually give you as great of a value as it seems. Of course, there are some exceptions that are worth the money, but these are rare and usually on the expensive side. In this series, we’ll break down some of the advent calendars available at Sephora this season to figure out whether or not they’re worth the money.

The total known value for the Wild Wishes Advent Calendar is $97, or $17 more than Sephora’s calculated value. Technically, the calendar is worth even more since there are several items that didn’t have listed prices. Again, this may seem like a great value, but is it really? 10 of the 24 items included are single-use. That being said, there are a couple of full size products that would last a while such as the lipsticks and lip balms. There are even mini size products that would be good for a few uses including the nail polishes, eye pencil, and cleansing water. However, the calendar is signficantly cheapened with the addition of 5 “dollar-store” items including a hair clamp, hair ribbons, a mini nail file, and a pocket mirror.

Final Verdict: Not worth it.

The 10 single use items combined with the 5 items that are barely worth anything makes almost 62.5% of the calendar disposable after using the items one time. $45 for only using most of the items just one time is definitely not worth it! Instead, spending the same amount of money on products that have more use value will give you more bang for your buck.
