Though the characters of Sharkboy and Lavagirl are returning to screen in 2021 in Robert Rodriguez’s “We Can Be Heroes,” Taylor Lautner is reportedly not returning to the role that he famously played in 2005.
On the Netflix Film Twitter account, the first photos of Sharkboy and Lavagirl were shown featuring Taylor Dooley returning to the role and a masked actor filling in for the role of Sharkboy. The post also featured a quick glimpse at the two characters’ daughter who is played by Vivian Lyra Blair.
The absence of Lautner in the promotional material for the film was immediately noticed by fans of the original film with users taking to Twitter to question why he isn’t in the film.
Lautner has not appeared in a major film since 2016’s “Run the Tide” or television series since “Cuckoo,” where he starred as a series regular until 2018. In contrast, Taylor Dooley had taken a break from acting a couple of years after the release of “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl” going to college to get a degree in Psychology. She returned to film in 2017 in the film “Hell Mountain” but now returns to the role that she is most famous for.
Though it is unknown why Lautner is not in the upcoming film, his presence will be dearly missed by fans of the original film. In memory of the absence of Lautner, here is the Dream song from the original film.
